How long must a person have practiced photography before they can consider themselves a photographer?

When they know that a shot will be great, when they are able to plan shots. When they make money off shots.

I'd like to think that I know when a shot will be great, and can plan shots. But I'm also pretty certain that I'm never going to be able to make any money from it. Does that mean I'm never going to be a photographer?

I dunno, I just read up what I've seen people say a photographers definition is.

I'd probably say it's to understand your equipment, how it works and why it works in that way. Not just...point and shoot.

I'd be more inclined to agree with that version :)

:P Yeah it feels more right.

Have you noticed how many "photographers" there are here on deviantart? people with P&s that take snapshots of random stuff, like their legs, and put it under photographys instead of snapshots.

Yeah, that's what made me think about it in the first place. I was considering changing my "is an Angelina Jolie Fetishist" to something more...serious, like blahblah Photographer but I don't know if I consider myself a photographer yet.

I dont think it is a matter of time, I think it is a matter of practice and experience...I would consider you as a photographer. =)

If you are getting favs and comments (good comments) you know that you are doing something right

Pick up a camera, take a picture.

BOOM, you're a photographer.

NOW, whether or not you're a GOOD photographer is another story...
